Weltreise -Impfungen

Autsch! Impfungen und Malaria-Prophylaxe
Südamerika-Mittelamerika-Nordamerika

World trip vaccinations

Ouch! Vaccinations and Malaria prophylaxis
South America - Latin America - North America

Already 17 months before the start of our big adventure begins the big vaccination. Originally intended as an informational event, put the first injection faster in the arm than I could say "Ouch!" And I was also 160 euros poorer (Hepatitis).

My doctor was highly motivated - I think she is really grateful that our little adventure escapes her from the cough, runny noses and high blood pressure everyday of her small village practice. Full of enthusiasm, she picks up a thick catalog with all the countries of the world and wants to read about the necessary vaccinations in each country. In addition, she also looks right in Rossi's vaccination record and writes on a sticky note, with which vaccinations he should have fun. I'm speechless!

Mein persönlicher Impfplan sieht nun also wohl folgende Impfungen vor:

A small carelessness of my parents to thank (sorry, but that is unfortunately like that ...), I must be vaccinated with a bit more than just for the trip would would be necessary. So I miss a rubella vaccination from 1994, which must necessarily be made. New findings on the efficacy of the single measles vaccine for the years 1972 and younger makes a post-vaccination necessary (...not the fault of my parents). Since I'm a teacher that is probably useful.

My personal vaccination plan now looks like that:

  • 3x Hepatitis A + B (on day 0, after 6 weeks, after 6 to 12 months)
  • 1x Measles, Rubella, Mumps (You should be fit and you should leave at least 1 month distance to the Yellow fever vaccine)
  • 1x Yellow fever (live vaccine, you should be healthy and fit)
  • 4x Rabies (Day 0, day 7, day 28 and after about 6 months)

A combined preparation for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and polio are up-to-date with me.

The hepatitis vaccine can be obtained by prescription from the pharmacy, with the pharmacy then delivering the vaccine to practice, so that the cold chain is not interrupted. I was lucky and could bring the vaccine itself directly from the pharmacy one floor higher in the doctor's office, because it was in stock in the pharmacy. But normally that can take a day.

Although Cholera may occur, my doctor advised us to go to the nearest hospital in the case of a recent outbreak and to take an oral dose immediately.

The Yellow fever vaccine can only be vaccinated at official yellow fever sites (in Germany). That sounds more official than it is. The reason is quite pragmatic: the vaccine is given only in doses of 10, therefore, vaccine patients are summarized to a collection date in these practices.

For the prevention of Malaria*, my family doctor calculates the consumption according to the planned route. In her clever book I could see that we have to look carefully where and when (rainy season / dry season) we will stay in which country to determine the approximate needs. My family doctor said, we could do that a week before. Really scent! ;-)

* Of course there is also the opinion not to be vaccinated against malaria (because of the side effects), but only take something, if the disease breaks out.
